Joel Abraham, the chief executive of the FCCC, emphasizes the significance of budgeting and making careful purchasing decisions amidst the financial demands families often face at this time.

Abraham advises parents and guardians to maximize their purchasing power by comparing prices and choosing trustworthy retailers, while being cautious of promotional tactics that may mislead them. “This approach can help ensure that children have all the essential supplies they need for the year ahead,” he stated.

The FCCC regulates the prices of stationery and textbooks through the Counter Inflation (Price Control) (Stationery and Textbooks) (No.24) Order 1993. This framework specifies allowable profit margins for wholesalers and retailers, aiming to promote equitable pricing. To ensure compliance, the Commission has conducted over 140 inspections and surveillances focused on back-to-school items to assess trader practices regarding price markups.

A concerning trend this year is the rise of scams related to school vouchers, with offers promising significant discounts or “free” supplies which can lead to financial loss for unsuspecting parents. Abraham cautions consumers to verify the authenticity of such offers before providing any personal or payment information.

Furthermore, the FCCC encourages shoppers to compare prices across multiple outlets, scrutinize product labels for quality assurance, and understand return policies, particularly for electronics. If consumers suspect price gouging or unfair trading practices, they are urged to report these issues to the FCCC.

“During the back-to-school rush, some traders may exploit consumer urgency,” said Abraham, asserting the importance of community vigilance in protecting individual interests and the wider community.
