As families in Fiji prepare for the upcoming school year, the Fijian Competition & Consumer Commission (FCCC) is advising consumers to stay vigilant and informed during their back-to-school shopping. FCCC Chief Executive Joel Abraham has underscored the importance of creating a budget and sticking to it amid the financial pressures parents face when purchasing school supplies.

“By comparing prices and choosing reputable retailers, parents can maximize their spending and ensure their children have all the essentials they need for the year ahead. It’s essential to be cautious of misleading promotions,” Abraham stated.

The FCCC enforces price regulations for stationery and textbooks under the Counter Inflation (Price Control) (Stationery and Textbooks) (No.24) Order 1993. This regulation sets the profit margins permitted for wholesalers and retailers, aimed at promoting fair pricing in the market. To ensure compliance, the Commission has carried out over 140 inspections and surveillances focused on the pricing of back-to-school items.

Abraham emphasized the rising concern over scams related to school vouchers, which promise significant discounts or “free” supplies but can lead to financial losses for unsuspecting consumers. He urges parents to verify the authenticity of these offers to avoid scams that take advantage of the urgency surrounding back-to-school shopping.

Before making purchases, consumers are encouraged to check prices at various stores, ensure product quality through label inspection, and understand the return policies, especially for electronics like calculators. Furthermore, individuals are advised to report any instances of price gouging or dubious trading practices directly to the FCCC.

“As the back-to-school rush unfolds, it’s crucial to stay alert and safeguard your interests and the wider community’s interests,” Abraham noted. The FCCC is committed to monitoring market practices closely throughout this period to protect consumers and ensure a fair shopping experience.

This proactive stance not only aims to ensure that families can shop confidently but also fosters an environment where ethical trading is upheld, making the start of the academic year a positive experience for all involved.
