As families in Fiji prepare for the new academic year, the Fijian Competition & Consumer Commission (FCCC) is advising consumers to remain vigilant and well-informed during their back-to-school shopping. FCCC Chief Executive Joel Abraham emphasized the importance of budgeting and careful financial planning amidst the pressures many parents face during this time.

Abraham pointed out that by comparing prices and choosing reputable retailers, parents can optimize their spending and ensure that their children have all the necessary supplies. He cautioned against misleading promotions that can lead to unnecessary expenses. The FCCC enforces price regulations for stationery and textbooks through the Counter Inflation (Price Control) (Stationery and Textbooks) (No.24) Order 1993, which sets allowable profit margins for wholesalers and retailers, ensuring fair pricing practices in the market.

To ensure compliance with these regulations, the FCCC has conducted over 140 targeted inspections aimed at monitoring the pricing of back-to-school items. Abraham expressed a particular concern regarding the rise of scams related to school vouchers, which often promise significant discounts or “free” supplies but can result in financial losses for unwary consumers. He urged parents to verify the authenticity of promotional offers before sharing personal or financial information.

Before making purchases, Abraham recommends that consumers compare prices across various outlets, check product quality through label inspections, and familiarize themselves with return policies, especially regarding electronics. He also emphasized the importance of retaining receipts in case proof of purchase is necessary.

Additionally, if consumers suspect price gouging or any unfair trading practices, they are encouraged to report these issues to the FCCC. The commission’s proactive approach aims not only to safeguard shoppers but also to encourage a sense of community awareness and support.

In summary, the FCCC’s efforts to promote fair shopping practices during the back-to-school season aim to empower families and foster an ethical marketplace. By staying informed and vigilant, consumers can navigate this busy shopping period with confidence, ensuring a positive start to the academic year for all involved. This cooperative spirit is essential for building a supportive community where families can thrive as they prepare for school.
