Stay Safe: Urgent Security Tips Amid Rising Crime Threats

The public is advised to implement robust security measures to protect their homes and belongings.

Assistant Commissioner of Police – Operations (ACP) Livai Driu highlighted the increased risk of crime due to ongoing events and gatherings that leave homes unattended. “Many families are attending various activities, making their residences vulnerable to criminal activity,” he stated.

ACP Driu also emphasized the importance of school management conducting regular security assessments of their facilities, as educational institutions can be potential targets for theft.

In a recent incident, a 27-year-old man was apprehended for his alleged role in an aggravated robbery at a secondary school in Lautoka, where he reportedly entered the office of a senior staff member and stole multiple items. Lautoka Police are currently seeking the suspect’s accomplices as the investigation progresses.

“Desperation can lead to individuals engaging in criminal behavior to address their financial struggles, which is a trend we often observe during this time of year. This highlights the need for everyone to remain alert to prevent becoming victims of theft or robbery,” ACP Driu warned.

He urged individuals to thoroughly secure their properties by identifying any vulnerabilities and reinforcing points of entry. It is advised to check and replace locks on doors and windows if necessary, and when away, to enlist the help of friends or neighbors to monitor any suspicious activities.

Additionally, he recommended forming a neighborhood chat group to facilitate sharing information and keeping everyone informed about local happenings. Residents should also make a habit of ensuring all doors and windows are secured, and not to leave any valuables visible in vehicles, as this can entice thieves.
