The Acting Police Commissioner, Juki Fong Chew, is urging the public to prioritize their safety while traveling during the festive season. His call comes in light of a troubling rise in reports of missing persons over recent months.
Commissioner Chew emphasized the importance of communication, stating that many reports of missing individuals only surface after their families have been anxious for their return, often when they have been unaccounted for for over a day. He stressed that people should inform their families about their plans and whereabouts to alleviate unnecessary worry.
“Families grow anxious when their loved ones do not return home, and while we conduct searches, we often discover that the missing individuals have not communicated with their families,” he noted. He indicated that many of the reported cases involve young people aged between 16 and 18 years.
Chew mentioned that police often feel limited in intervening when individuals assert their rights, which sometimes complicates their efforts. “When it comes to your rights, we must respect them. However, it’s important to always consider your safety and remain aware of your surroundings,” he remarked, highlighting that incidents can happen to anyone, regardless of age.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, echoed these sentiments, noting that missing persons cases, which were once infrequent, have become a significant focus for the police force. “We are treating these cases with the seriousness they deserve and are directing our investigators to put in greater efforts to address them,” he added.
It is a pressing reminder for everyone to remain vigilant and aware, especially during busy times like the festive season. The proactive stance of the police in addressing these concerns should be seen as a positive step towards ensuring community safety. By fostering open communication among family members regarding travel plans, individuals can help alleviate unnecessary anxiety and ensure their safety while enjoying the festive season.
