The National Fire Authority (NFA) is encouraging the public to remain alert and prioritize safety as they celebrate the festive season. In a New Year’s address, CEO Puamau Sowane expressed concern for the lives and properties lost during this period.

Sowane highlighted that December has historically seen a spike in residential fires, with NFA data showing a troubling trend over the last five years. From 2019 to 2023, there were 90 residential fires reported in December, resulting in an estimated $11.6 million worth of damages. The specific numbers showed 19 fires in 2019, 10 in 2020, 19 in 2021, and 21 each in 2022 and 2023. Notably, with just one day remaining in the month, 11 fires have already been recorded this December.

As the year draws to a close, the NFA is urging everyone to practice caution, ensure the safety of their homes, and enjoy the festivities responsibly with their loved ones.

This message serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of fire safety, especially during a season typically recognized for increased activity and celebrations. By taking simple precautions, families can enjoy the holiday period while minimizing the risk of fire-related incidents.

Summarizing the situation, it is clear that awareness and diligence can help reduce the number of tragedies during this festive time, emphasizing the hope that future celebrations can occur without the overshadow of fire hazards.
