The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is reminding vehicle owners and enthusiasts in Fiji to adhere to legal requirements for vehicle modifications to ensure these changes are legal, safe, and compliant with local regulations.
LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized that compliance is crucial for road safety and vehicle conformity across the country. While modifications can improve a vehicle’s performance and appearance, Mr. Rokosawa highlighted the importance of ensuring that such modifications align with LTA regulations.
He urged vehicle owners to pursue legal avenues when considering modifications and noted that any changes require prior written approval from the LTA to guarantee safety and adherence to legal standards.
“Vehicle modifications are popular among many owners, but it is essential that these modifications meet regulatory requirements. We recognize the increasing interest in vehicle customization, but the safety of both passengers and the general public must not be compromised. This is why we have established legal requirements and procedures for obtaining approval before making any changes,” Mr. Rokosawa said.
He encouraged car owners to follow the correct processes to avoid penalties, fines, or jeopardizing public safety.
“Failure to comply with modification regulations can lead to severe consequences. We urge all vehicle owners to take the necessary steps and seek approval before making any changes. Our primary goal is to maintain safety on Fiji’s roads by ensuring all vehicles comply with required safety standards,” the CEO added.
To comply with LTA regulations, vehicle owners should follow these steps for obtaining approval for modifications:
1. Identify Necessary Modifications: Determine which changes need approval, such as bull bars, roof racks, and fog lamps.
2. Prepare Application Documentation:
– A letter explaining the purpose of the modification;
– Specifications and plans for the equipment;
– Manufacturer specifications or details of factory-installed parts;
– Photos of the equipment and its installation.
3. Submit Application: Fill out the appropriate application form and send it to the LTA for approval.
4. Await Approval: Do not proceed with modifications until you receive written approval from the LTA.
5. Conduct Regular Inspections: After modifications, ensure the vehicle complies with all safety standards.
Mr. Rokosawa warned that vehicle owners who modify their vehicles without following LTA’s regulations could face hefty fines, with individual offenders potentially facing a fixed penalty of $75, or up to $1000 maximum or six months in jail. Companies could incur a fixed penalty of $300, with a maximum penalty of $2000 or up to twelve months imprisonment.
These penalties aim to ensure public safety and adherence to road regulations. Additionally, vehicles with illegal modifications may fail safety inspections, which are necessary for road usage. Failure to pass these inspections may compel owners to reverse the modifications or make necessary changes to meet LTA standards, resulting in added financial burdens.
Mr. Rokosawa concluded by stating that vehicle safety is a collective responsibility, and adhering to legal processes and maintaining compliance with LTA regulations can help prevent accidents.
