The Land Transport Authority is urging all road users nationwide to exercise caution as severe weather, characterized by heavy rainfall and flash flooding, affects many areas. Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized the heightened risks to road safety during these challenging conditions and called on both drivers and pedestrians to remain vigilant while traveling.
“With intense rainfall and potential flooding in various regions, it is crucial for all road users to be alert. The combination of heavy rain, reduced visibility, and flooded roads leads to hazardous situations,” Rokosawa noted. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety for everyone on the roads.
The Authority advises the public to minimize unnecessary travel, particularly in areas prone to flooding. In cases where travel is essential, individuals should stay informed about weather warnings and road closures, remaining attentive to rapidly changing conditions.
Rokosawa also warned of the dangers posed by reckless driving, as some drivers have been observed speeding and navigating through floodwaters, putting themselves and others in jeopardy. The Authority is prepared to take action against those who violate traffic laws and compromise public safety, reinforcing that penalties will be imposed to discourage dangerous driving behaviors.
He reminded drivers to adhere to speed limits, adjust their driving in accordance with the weather, maintain safe distances from other vehicles, use headlights in low visibility, limit overtaking maneuvers, and plan trips accordingly to account for possible delays caused by adverse weather or road conditions.
Looking forward, the Authority remains committed to ensuring public safety as severe weather persists, encouraging all road users to take necessary precautions.
In light of these warnings, there is hope that increased awareness and responsible behavior among road users will lead to safer travel conditions and a lower incidence of accidents during this challenging weather period.
