The National Fire Authority (NFA) is emphasizing the importance of vigilance and safety during the festive season, as CEO Puamau Sowane highlights the tragic loss of lives and homes that can occur during this time. In his message for the New Year, Sowane noted that December often sees a spike in residential fires, reflecting a concerning trend over the past five years.
According to NFA data, there have been a total of 90 residential fires reported in December from 2019 to 2023, resulting in damages amounting to $11.6 million. The breakdown shows the number of incidents has fluctuated: 19 fires in 2019, 10 in 2020, 19 in 2021, and rising to 21 both in 2022 and 2023. With one day left in December, the current month has already recorded 11 fires.
As we celebrate the end of the year and the joy of the festive season, the NFA strongly urges everyone to prioritize safety. By being cautious and responsible, families can enjoy their celebrations without unnecessary risks.
This message serves as a timely reminder that safety should always come first, especially during festive gatherings, where increased activities in cooking and decorations can heighten fire risks.
By fostering a culture of awareness and preventive measures, we can aim for a brighter and safer New Year ahead.
