Minister for Disaster Risk Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, is urging Fijians to put their safety first as the nation experiences ongoing rainfall linked to a Tropical Disturbance (TD01F) located approximately 240 kilometers west of Yasawa-i-Rara. Although the likelihood of TD01F developing into a tropical cyclone remains low, Mr. Ditoka emphasized that this does not eliminate the impact of the heavy rain and advised the public to remain watchful.
He remarked, “I strongly urge all Fijians to remain vigilant as weather systems can evolve rapidly.” With New Year celebrations approaching, he highlighted the need for everyone to prioritize safety. This includes staying informed through official sources, adhering to advisories from authorities, and making appropriate preparations.
Mr. Ditoka recommended that residents take proactive measures, such as securing their properties, preparing emergency supplies, and having family plans in place, which could greatly enhance their safety and preparedness levels. The Minister reiterated the government’s prior recommendation for individuals in affected regions to refrain from attending public gatherings, noting that any modifications to this advisory would come after thorough discussions with disaster management teams and other relevant parties.
He assured those residing in evacuation centers that the government is dedicated to providing ongoing support during these challenging times. “Relief and rehabilitation efforts are in full swing, and we are collaborating closely with local authorities, NGOs, community groups, and faith-based organizations to expedite the restoration of normalcy,” he pledged.
This call to action serves as a reminder of the importance of community resilience and collaboration in the face of natural challenges. As Fijians prepare to celebrate the New Year, focusing on safety measures will contribute not only to individual well-being but also to a collective spirit of care and responsibility.
