Stay Aware: Fiji’s National Scam Awareness Week Launches Against Evolving Fraud Tactics

Scammers are constantly adapting their methods to align with global trends. This information was shared by Shaheen Ali, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Trade, Co-operatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communications, at the launch of the first National Scam Awareness Week.

“In our fast-paced digital environment, it is essential to recognize that scams have unfortunately become a routine part of life,” Ali stated. He highlighted the various scams currently affecting Fiji, such as impersonation schemes, fraudulent job offers, and romance scams, which are often fueled by misleading information from social media platforms.

“The National Scam Awareness Week is crucial for educating not only young adults but also future generations about identifying and safeguarding against scams,” he added. To enhance outreach, the campaign will utilize multiple media platforms, including billboards and social media, to increase public awareness.

In addition, Seema Shandil, the Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Council of Fiji, pointed out the lack of engagement from consumers during outreach initiatives. She observed that consumer interest only rises when individuals fall victim to scams.

“Despite our repeated warnings about potential scams and guidance on identifying scammers, many individuals remain indifferent,” Shandil explained. She noted that, although extensive awareness efforts are conducted both online and in local communities, people frequently disregard the advice given.

Regrettably, this negligence often leads consumers to seek assistance only after they have been scammed. Last year, the eBay Online Shop recruitment scam had a significant impact, affecting 900 Fijians and resulting in complaints totaling $1.7 million reported by the council.

“The repercussions of such scams are just the tip of the iceberg,” Shandil emphasized. On a global scale, online fraud has been on the rise, with phishing emails and other deceptive tactics targeting both individuals and businesses.

The Anti-Scam Taskforce has been established to improve coordination among relevant agencies, increase awareness, and advocate for protective measures through initiatives like Scam Awareness Week. The taskforce aims to enhance public understanding and implement collaborative educational campaigns, as well as to push for stricter laws and regulations against scams.
