Thirty-three-year-old Simione Ravia Jr., a father of three, has turned his life around by returning to education after a decade-long hiatus. He proudly graduated from Pacific Polytech’s Nausori campus with a National Certificate in Automotive Electrical and Electronics Engineering (Level 3) earlier this week.

Ravia described his accomplishment as one that required significant sacrifice rather than ease. “I left studying 10 years ago, but thankfully the TELS scheme allowed me to complete my education,” he expressed. He acknowledged that without the encouragement of the Pacific Polytech team who visited his village in Naitasiri, he might not have pursued this educational path.

One of the greatest challenges he faced was balancing his studies with his family responsibilities. “The hardest part was trying to provide for my family while studying,” he admitted, recalling moments of self-doubt regarding whether he was making the right decision. However, support from his family was a turning point; they took on farm work to allow him to focus on his studies. “My family stood by me. That support kept me going,” he shared.

Ravia’s experience shifted his perspective on success. He noted that vocational education emphasizes skills development over traditional academic achievements. “It’s not much about writing, but about skills development and understanding. Your skills matter most,” he said.

In a call to action for other stay-at-home fathers, he urged them to seize similar opportunities, stating, “Build your skills and your future. One day you’ll be older, with a family depending on you.” Graduating alongside three of his siblings, Ravia viewed this milestone as a beacon of hope and unity, symbolizing a brighter future built through trade skills. His journey serves as an inspiring reminder that with determination and support, anyone can reshape their future.
