Stay Alert: Scams Evolve as Awareness Week Kicks Off in Fiji

Scammers are constantly adapting their methods to reflect global trends, according to Shaheen Ali, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Trade, Co-operatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communications. He made these remarks at the launch of the inaugural National Scam Awareness Week.

Mr. Ali emphasized the importance of recognizing that scams are an unfortunate reality in today’s fast-paced digital landscape. He highlighted several prevalent scams in Fiji, including impersonation schemes, fake job offers, and romance scams, which are often worsened by misleading social media communications.

“The National Scam Awareness Week serves as a crucial platform for educating not only young adults but also future generations on how to identify and protect themselves from scams,” he stated. To reach a wider audience, the campaign will utilize various media channels, including billboards and social media.

Seema Shandil, the Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Council of Fiji, pointed out a concerning trend of low consumer engagement during outreach programs. Interestingly, requests for help surged only after consumers had been scammed. Ms. Shandil expressed that despite multiple warnings about potential scams and advice on how to recognize them, many consumers remain indifferent.

She noted that extensive awareness efforts both online and at the grassroots level have not yielded the expected response, leading consumers to seek assistance only after becoming victims of scams. Last year, the impact of the eBay Online Shop recruitment scam affected 900 Fijians, with complaints totaling $1.7 million recorded by the council.

“The repercussions of such scams are just the beginning,” Ms. Shandil remarked. On a global scale, online fraud has increased, with phishing emails and various deceptive practices targeting individuals and businesses alike.

The Anti-Scam Taskforce was established to improve coordination among agencies, raise awareness, and advocate for protective measures through initiatives like Scam Awareness Week. The taskforce aims to enhance public understanding and implement joint educational campaigns while pushing for stricter laws and regulations.
