The Police M-PAiSA Task Force is actively addressing the rising incidents of scams targeting users of the M-PAiSA platform, particularly as families prepare to withdraw the recently disbursed $200 back-to-school assistance. Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew has issued a stern advisory urging parents and guardians to remain vigilant during this financially sensitive period.
Mr. Chew emphasizes the importance of adults personally managing withdrawals of assistance funds from outlets such as Vodafone Fiji Limited, M-PAiSA agents, banks, and online services. He cautions against allowing children or unaccompanied individuals to handle financial transactions, as opportunistic scammers may be lurking to exploit unsuspecting individuals. “You don’t know who is at the sidelines exploring the opportunity to steal information or money,” he stated, highlighting the need for heightened caution.
This warning aligns with ongoing efforts by the Fiji Police, which have been vocal about the increasing prevalence of scams during critical financial times, particularly around the back-to-school season. Scammers often use various communication platforms, including text messages, Viber, WhatsApp, and Facebook, to target vulnerable families with unsolicited financial requests or offers that may seem too good to be true.
Additionally, the Commissioner underscores the risks associated with sharing sensitive personal information, including Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) and passwords. He notes that losing funds to scams can lead to complicated recovery processes requiring substantial involvement from law enforcement and other external agencies.
To foster a culture of safety and resilience within the community, the police encourage families to discuss scams openly, share information about fraud tactics, and adopt responsible financial practices. By promoting awareness and cooperation, communities can work together to create a safer environment, allowing families to navigate their financial dealings with more security and peace of mind.
This proactive approach not only protects individual families but also strengthens community ties, allowing everyone to thrive without the fear of exploitation. As families embark on this back-to-school season, staying informed and vigilant will empower them to protect their finances effectively, contributing to a safer and more supportive community atmosphere.
