As families in Fiji prepare for the new academic year, the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) is urging consumers to stay vigilant and informed during their back-to-school shopping endeavors. FCCC Chief Executive Joel Abraham has highlighted the importance of careful budgeting and planning, particularly as many parents face financial pressures while purchasing essential school supplies.

Abraham encourages parents and guardians to maximize their purchasing power by comparing prices, selecting reputable retailers, and being aware of potentially misleading promotions. He stated, “By applying these strategies, families can ensure their children have all necessary supplies while avoiding unnecessary expenses.”

The FCCC oversees price regulations for stationery and textbooks based on the Counter Inflation (Price Control) (Stationery and Textbooks) (No. 24) Order 1993. This regulation specifies allowable profit margins for wholesalers and retailers, ensuring fair pricing practices are upheld throughout the market. The commission has already conducted over 140 inspections and surveillances targeting back-to-school items to ensure compliance with these regulations.

A significant concern for this year is the rise of scams related to school vouchers, with fraudulent offers promising substantial discounts or “free” supplies. Abraham strongly advises consumers to verify the authenticity of any such promotions to avoid potential financial loss.

Before making any purchases, the FCCC recommends that consumers check prices at various outlets, examine product labels to ensure quality, and familiarize themselves with return policies, particularly for electronic items like calculators. If consumers suspect price gouging or any unfair trading practices, they are encouraged to report these issues to the FCCC directly.

In summary, the proactive measures taken by the FCCC aim to create a fair shopping environment, empowering families as they prepare for school. By staying informed and vigilant, consumers can navigate the back-to-school shopping season confidently, ensuring a positive start to the academic year for everyone involved. This cooperative spirit fosters community resilience and integrity, making the shopping experience safe and enriching for all families.
