ANZ Fiji has issued an alert to its customers in the Pacific, highlighting the necessity for vigilance against scammers, especially during this busy holiday season. Rabih Yazbek, the head of ANZ Fiji, pointed out that this time of year presents a lucrative opportunity for fraudsters who may exploit activities related to parcel deliveries and holiday bookings.
Scammers often take advantage of the rush surrounding Christmas and New Year, preying on individuals who are distracted amidst the festivities. Yazbek urged customers to trust their instincts and exercise caution before sharing personal details, clicking on unfamiliar links, or making online purchases.
In an effort to bolster customer awareness of scams and fraud, ANZ has conducted educational sessions focused on developments in cybersecurity. Earlier this year, Eli Hirschauge, the head of Information Security at ANZ, visited the Pacific region to engage with various stakeholders, including customers, government departments, the Reserve Bank of Fiji, and local media on topics of cyber risks and fraud prevention.
Yazbek emphasized the importance of staying updated on the latest scam tactics, noting the increasing sophistication of fraud schemes. He advised customers to routinely check their bank statements and banking apps, promptly reporting any suspicious activity to mitigate potential losses.
Customers were reminded that ANZ would never solicit personal information through email or text messages. Encouraging vigilance, Yazbek concluded, “If something feels off, it probably is.”
In a world where scams are on the rise, such awareness campaigns are vital for consumer protection. By remaining informed and cautious, customers can significantly reduce their risk of falling victim to these sophisticated fraud attempts.
Emphasizing proactive measures can instill confidence in the community, reassuring individuals that they can protect themselves and their finances during the holiday season and beyond.
