The government will not hasten the establishment of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission secretariat. Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation, Sashi Kiran, expressed her deep commitment to this project during her reply to the 2024-2025 budget debate in Parliament on Monday.
“This budget supports the setup of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission secretariat,” said Ms. Kiran. “We have taken the first step. We are not rushing this process.”
She emphasized the importance of listening to the people and learning lessons from other countries that have undergone similar experiences. “We want the commission to be a key foundation for national unity and nation-building, which is essential for our future,” she stated. Ms. Kiran also thanked the Leader of the Opposition for acknowledging the importance of the commission.
Ms. Kiran described the 2024-2025 budget as straightforward and devoid of gimmicks. “This is why I have many reasons to support this budget,” she said. “As the Minister of Finance mentioned, it is a solid and honest budget that lays the groundwork for the long-term progress needed to unite us as different communities and as one nation.”
