Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced that the Cabinet has officially approved the issuance of a State Grant to Robert Pearson Miller, which involves the conversion of a closed road previously designated as Lot 1 SO 2991. This decision is rooted in historical discussions dating back to the early 1970s when the government acquired this land for the purpose of constructing the Suva-Nadi Highway.
With the successful completion and operation of the highway, the necessity to maintain the Closed Old Queens Road is no longer relevant. This has paved the way for the land to revert to its former tenure, allowing for its rightful use by the Miller family.
Rabuka emphasized that this initiative not only exemplifies the government’s commitment to effective land management but also honors historical agreements while catering to contemporary community needs. The approval of the State Grant symbolizes a strategic move towards improving land access for community needs.
This approval is significantly aligned with broader infrastructure development initiatives across Fiji, particularly the ambitious Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project, which entails a FJD $300 million investment financed through China’s Belt and Road Initiative. This project aims to enhance transportation networks, especially benefiting rural communities by fostering local economic growth and improving connectivity.
In highlighting the importance of developing infrastructure, Rabuka expressed optimism regarding the opportunities this will create for local communities. Each step taken to enhance connectivity is viewed as an avenue for economic empowerment, contributing to better livelihoods, particularly for residents in rural areas.
In summary, the approval of the State Grant marks a pivotal advancement in effective land management, aligning with Fiji’s ongoing commitment to infrastructure development. As these projects unfold, they hold great potential for elevating the quality of life and economic opportunities for rural populations, fostering a hopeful outlook for Fiji’s future.
