Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that the Cabinet has approved the issuance of a State Grant to Robert Pearson Miller through the conversion of a previously closed road, known as Lot 1 SO 2991. This decision comes as the culmination of discussions dating back to the early 1970s when the government acquired this land to facilitate the construction of the Suva-Nadi Highway.
With the highway now fully operational, Rabuka noted that the original justification for the Closed Old Queens Road is no longer relevant. Consequently, the government has approved the land reverting to its former tenure for appropriate use. This move showcases the government’s commitment to effective land management and fulfilling historical agreements while addressing contemporary community interests.
Moreover, this initiative aligns with broader infrastructure projects aimed at improving transportation networks, particularly the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project, which involves an investment of FJD $300 million funded by China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Such projects are designed to primarily benefit rural communities, fostering local economic growth and enhancing connectivity.
Rabuka articulated the importance of infrastructure development not only as a means of constructing physical roads but also as a pathway to creating economic opportunities and empowering local communities. He shared a hopeful perspective that these infrastructural improvements will lead to enhanced livelihoods for residents in rural areas.
In summary, the approval of the State Grant represents a significant advancement in efficient land management and highlights the government’s ongoing commitment to infrastructure development. With ongoing initiatives focused on connectivity and empowerment, there lies a hopeful outlook for the enrichment of rural livelihoods and economic prospects for Fiji’s communities.
