Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced the Cabinet’s decision to issue a State Grant to Robert Pearson Miller, following the conversion of a closed road known as Lot 1 SO 2991. This initiative marks a significant step in the context of historical discussions dating back to the early 1970s when the government acquired land from the Millers to support the construction of the Suva-Nadi Highway.
Rabuka emphasized that the highway is now fully operational, rendering the original need for the Closed Old Queens Road obsolete. Accordingly, the government has approved the reversion of this land back to its former tenure, allowing it to be utilized for appropriate purposes. This move reflects the government’s commitment to effective land management and honoring past agreements while meeting current community needs.
The approval of this State Grant is particularly relevant considering other infrastructure projects in Fiji. For instance, the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project, which has an investment of FJD $300 million funded by China’s Belt and Road Initiative, aims to enhance transport networks primarily benefiting rural communities. Such initiatives underscore the government’s focus on improving connectivity to foster economic opportunities and empower local populations.
In summary, the decision to grant this State Grant signals progress in efficient land management and state infrastructure development. Rabuka’s administration is optimistic that ongoing investments in transport and connectivity can lead to better livelihoods and sustainable economic growth for rural residents in Fiji. With a commitment to enhancing infrastructure, there remains a hopeful outlook for the future, suggesting that local communities will continue to thrive and develop.
