Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that the Cabinet has approved the issuance of a State Grant to Robert Pearson Miller through the conversion of a previously closed road designated as Lot 1 SO 2991. This decision follows discussions that began in the early 1970s when the government acquired part of the land to facilitate the construction of the Suva-Nadi Highway.

With the completion and full operation of the Suva-Nadi Highway, the necessity for the Closed Old Queens Road has diminished. As a result, the government has approved the reversion of this land to its former tenure, allowing it to be utilized for appropriate purposes. Rabuka emphasized that this initiative reflects the government’s commitment to effective land management and honoring historical agreements while addressing contemporary community needs.

Notably, this approval is aligned with broader infrastructure initiatives in Fiji, particularly the ambitious Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project, which carries a budget of FJD $300 million and is funded by China’s Belt and Road Initiative. This project is set to enhance transportation networks, predominantly benefiting rural communities and fostering local economic growth.

Rabuka also highlighted the importance of improving infrastructure as a means to create economic opportunities and empower local communities. He expressed optimism that ongoing investments in transport and connectivity would lead to better livelihoods, especially for residents in rural areas.

In summary, the approval of the State Grant represents a significant advancement in efficient land management and underlines the government’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure development. As these initiatives continue to unfold, they hold promise for economic empowerment and improved living standards for Fiji’s rural population, reflecting a hopeful outlook for the nation’s development.
