Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that the Cabinet has approved the issuance of a State Grant to Robert Pearson Miller by converting a previously closed road known as Lot 1 SO 2991. This decision is rooted in historical discussions from the early 1970s, during which the government acquired the land to facilitate the construction of the Suva-Nadi Highway.

With the highway now completed and operational, the original need for the Closed Old Queens Road has been rendered unnecessary. Consequently, the government has decided to revert this land to its former tenure, making it available for rightful use. This initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to effective land management, ensuring that historical agreements are honored while also addressing current community needs.

This initiative is particularly timely as it aligns with broader government efforts to enhance infrastructure across Fiji, including major projects such as the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. Funded by a grant under China’s Belt and Road Initiative, this ambitious project involves an investment of FJD $300 million and aims to significantly improve transport networks, benefiting rural communities by facilitating better access to economic opportunities.

Rabuka emphasized that investing in infrastructure is not merely about construction; it also aims to empower local communities, reduce urban migration, and foster economic growth. With strategic decisions like the State Grant approval and ongoing infrastructure upgrades, there is a hopeful outlook for improved livelihoods and opportunities for residents in rural areas.

In summary, the approval of this State Grant represents a vital step toward efficient land management and enhances overall infrastructure development in Fiji. The government’s continued commitment to building and upgrading transport networks signals a positive future for economic growth and community empowerment, particularly benefiting rural populations.
