Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that the Cabinet has approved the conversion of a previously closed road, known as Lot 1 SO 2991, into a State Grant, benefiting Robert Pearson Miller. This decision is rooted in discussions from the early 1970s when the land was acquired to facilitate the construction of the Suva-Nadi Highway.

Rabuka explained that with the highway now fully operational, the need for the Closed Old Queens Road has diminished, allowing the land to revert to its former tenure for rightful use. This initiative not only exemplifies the government’s commitment to efficient land management but also reflects an effort to honor historical agreements with the local community.

This move is significant as it coincides with broader initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure across Fiji, including the ambitious Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project, which has a substantial budget of FJD $300 million funded by China’s Belt and Road Initiative. This project is expected to significantly enhance transportation networks, thereby benefiting rural communities and fostering local economic growth.

Prime Minister Rabuka highlighted the importance of enhancing connectivity to create economic opportunities and empower local communities. By improving infrastructure and accessibility, the government hopes to facilitate better livelihoods and reduce urban migration, providing a hopeful outlook for rural residents.

In summary, the recent decision regarding the State Grant symbolizes a strategic advance toward effective land management and reinforces the government’s commitment to infrastructure development. Looking ahead, continued investments in road networks and other vital projects signal a promising future for economic growth and community development across Fiji. These initiatives have the potential to uplift local communities and ensure sustainable progress for all citizens.
