Four villages in the Namosi region are now enjoying satellite internet services thanks to a newly commissioned Starlink connectivity setup in Waivaka Village. This initiative is part of the Government’s Universal Service satellite community WiFi project, aimed at bridging the long-standing digital divide in rural and maritime communities.
Minister for Policing and Communications Ioane Naivalurua is spearheading this project, which aligns with the goals of the National Digital Strategy. The villages of Waivaka, Narukunibua, Nasigatoka, and Namosi are the first beneficiaries of this phase, marking a significant step towards extending reliable internet access beyond urban areas.
Minister Naivalurua highlights that the government is committed to enhancing digital inclusion, as connectivity plays a critical role in education, healthcare, business operations, and maintaining family relationships. The access to improved internet services is expected to facilitate online learning for students, help local businesses reach broader markets, and enhance access to essential public services.
During the launch event, residents of Waivaka participated actively, engaging with the Minister and officials to discuss the Starlink installation’s usage, benefits, and potential long-term impacts on their communities. Minister Naivalurua reiterated that their vision extends beyond mere connectivity, focusing on transforming it into opportunities for empowerment and sustainable community development.
The rollout of this technology is poised to bring significant positive changes to the connected villages, fostering growth and resilience in the rural community.
