Starlink Arrives on Fiji’s Koro Island, Upgrading Remote Government Services

Government services at the Nasau Government Station in Koro Island have significantly improved with the launch of Starlink satellite internet, an initiative led by the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management. Previously regarded as a telecommunication blackspot, Koro is now benefiting from reliable and high-speed internet connectivity, which is a game-changer for civil servants, students, businesses, and the entire community.

For years, officials at the Koro Government Station relied on external agencies for internet access, which hindered their efficiency and communication. The activation of Starlink is set to enhance service delivery by allowing local officials to work more autonomously, leading to faster response times and improved administrative processes.

Koro Island is among ten remote government stations targeted for this digital connectivity project, which is funded by the UNDP Pacific Gov4Res Programme. This initiative not only facilitates real-time communication with central government headquarters but also opens up new digital opportunities for nearby villages.

In tandem with this digital upgrade, the Reserve Bank of Fiji has organized a Financial Literacy Training session aimed primarily at women and youth in the community. Participants have engaged in practical lessons on SMART goal setting, budgeting, awareness of digital financial services, scams, and investment strategies. This training empowers locals to make informed financial decisions, further enhancing the community’s economic development.

The successful deployment of Starlink internet on Koro Island marks the dawn of a new digital era, characterized by enhanced access, efficiency, and community empowerment. This initiative aligns with the ongoing efforts in Fiji’s wider connectivity programs, including similar projects in areas like Kubulau and Rotuma, where satellite internet has been introduced to improve communication and service delivery.

By fostering efficient digital solutions, the Fijian government is paving the way for socio-economic advancements, increased educational resources, and improved disaster resilience in these remote regions, nurturing a hopeful future for their inhabitants as digital transformation continues to unfold across the nation.
