Mitchell Starc delivered an outstanding performance in T20 cricket, achieving his first five-wicket haul as the Delhi Capitals secured a convincing seven-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad during the Indian Premier League (IPL). The experienced Australian left-arm quick took 5 wickets for 35 runs, crucially helping to dismiss Sunrisers for a total of 163 runs after they had opted to bat first.
Aniket Verma emerged as a significant contributor for Sunrisers, scoring 74 runs off 41 balls, but it was not enough to withstand the combined bowling efforts of Starc and Kuldeep Yadav, who ended up with remarkable figures of 3-22. The Capitals’ chase was initiated strongly by Faf du Plessis, who scored 50 runs off just 27 balls, building an 81-run opening partnership with Jake Fraser-McGurk, giving Delhi a solid foundation.
Despite Zeeshan Ansari’s efforts, who claimed 3 wickets for 42 runs on his IPL debut, the Capitals reached their target comfortably, with Abishek Porel and Tristan Stubbs remaining not out at 34 and 21 runs, respectively, finishing the match with 30 balls to spare. This win marks a perfect start for the Capitals, who have won both of their opening matches this IPL season.
Starc’s achievement of a five-wicket haul is particularly significant, as it surpasses his previous best of 4-15, recorded almost a decade ago when he played for Royal Challengers Bangalore against Kings XI Punjab in May 2015. Not only did he capture critical wickets early in the innings, including that of Australia teammate Travis Head, but he was also supported by brilliant catches from Capitals skipper Axar Patel and du Plessis to complete the feat.
Reflecting on the match, Starc expressed satisfaction in contributing to the victory and emphasized the need for bowlers to adapt their strategies in T20 formats, given the evolving nature of the game. He demonstrated resilience and skill, showcasing the depth of talent present in the league.
The IPL continues to be an exciting battleground, with teams displaying aggressive tactics and looking to capitalize on burgeoning young talent, suggesting a thrilling season ahead for fans of cricket.
