As Fiji gears up to observe the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has urged all citizens to unite in confronting this critical issue, stressing that the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) is a shared responsibility.

In his national address, Rabuka emphasized that GBV is a widespread concern impacting communities across the nation. He called for efforts to tackle the issue to extend beyond the designated 16-day campaign, advocating for ongoing action throughout the year.

“Gender-based violence is an issue that demands our collective action—not just during these 16 days, but every day of the year, every year,” he asserted.

The Prime Minister pointed out that preventing violence against women and girls is not merely a social concern but a matter of significant national importance. He illustrated how violence undermines family stability, weakens community ties, and hinders the nation’s advancements.

“Violence robs families of their stability, communities of their strength, and the nation of its potential. Prevention must go hand in hand with justice, where women and girls are safe everywhere, and justice is a reality—not just a promise,” Rabuka noted.

Rakesh Chand, Deputy Director of Community-Oriented Policing, also highlighted the need for parents to remain vigilant, especially as the holiday season approaches. He warned that domestic violence incidents often increase during this time and urged families to create safer environments.

This year’s campaign is themed “From Prevention to Justice, Ending Violence, Impunity Against Women and Girls in All Spaces,” aiming to heighten awareness about violence prevention and ensure accountability for perpetrators while fostering safe spaces for women and girls.

Rabuka’s address serves as a compelling call to action for all citizens, organizations, and the community to come together in the fight against GBV.

“Ending gender-based violence is everyone’s responsibility,” the Prime Minister reiterated. “Together, we can create a society where women and girls can live without fear, and justice is not just a promise but a reality.”

As the campaign kicks off tomorrow, Fijians are encouraged to participate in activities and discussions designed to drive meaningful change. The spirit of unity and collective action can bring hope for a safer future for women and girls in Fiji.
