Shamima Ali, the coordinator of the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, emphasized the urgency for individuals to take action against violence towards women. In a recent interview, she highlighted that witnessing such violence without intervening is no longer acceptable, particularly within family settings, as it can have devastating consequences on victims’ lives.
Ali called for active participation in preventing domestic violence, urging those who may know of someone suffering abuse to step in and assist. “We must have intervention because this is a crime that is being committed,” she stated, stressing the role everyone plays in combating this pressing issue.
She pointed out that while most violence tends to be directed at women and marginalized groups, it is also important to acknowledge that men can be victims of domestic abuse. Ali noted that many men have reached out to the centre for assistance, although this is less frequently reported due to societal stigmas linked to male victimization.
Reflecting on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ali revealed a staggering 300% increase in reports of domestic violence, indicating that many men struggled with emotional distress, financial losses, and their effect on family dynamics during this challenging time. The centre has since adapted by training male advocates and providing tailored support services for men facing similar issues.
Ali underscored the alarming statistics shared by the health ministry, which highlight the severe consequences women can suffer during pregnancy due to domestic violence. While she acknowledged that conflict can occur on both sides, she reiterated that systemic patriarchy hinders women from defending themselves without serious repercussions.
This call to action from the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre serves to inspire communities to unite against violence, fostering an environment in which individuals hold responsibility for supporting one another in the quest for safety and dignity.
As we address these issues within our communities, it’s essential to maintain a hopeful perspective that collective action can lead to positive change and create a safer environment for all individuals.
