The ongoing discussion concerning the HFC Bank Stadium’s closure has taken a new turn, with the Fiji Sports Council making it clear that the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union (FSSRU) did not officially book the venue for the upcoming Vodafone Super Deans final scheduled for August 23. This situation creates urgency as the FSSRU looks for alternative venues for the event.
The closure of the national stadium was prompted by the need for maintenance, inspired in part by concerns regarding the condition of the pitch following recent events, including an international rugby test match. Gilbert Vakalalabure, acting CEO of the Fiji Sports Council, stated that the FSSRU has not communicated with them regarding any booking and emphasized that the decision to close the stadium was made within their jurisdiction, not by direct orders from the Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka.
In previous communications, Prime Minister Rabuka clarified his role, asserting that he did not issue directives for the closure of the stadium and that the decision was entirely in the hands of the Sports Council. His comments follow concerns raised about the pitch’s suitability for international matches due to visible issues like uneven surfaces and soft patches. The Prime Minister’s remarks are echoed in earlier reports highlighting the need for better facility management in Fiji’s sporting venues.
As a result of these developments, the FSSRU is now considering Govind Park in Ba as the new venue for the finals, while also facing logistical challenges as they address scheduling conflicts. The group is determined to maintain the integrity of the competition and ensure youth athletes continue to have opportunities to showcase their talents.
This situation not only emphasizes the pressing need for effective communication and venue management within Fiji’s sports organizations, but it also presents an opportunity for improvement in public infrastructure. With ongoing discussions and a proactive approach, there is hope that collaborations between various stakeholders may lead to long-term enhancements, ultimately benefiting athletes and fans alike.
The adaptability shown by the FSSRU, as they navigate these challenges, reflects a commitment to sustaining and improving youth rugby in Fiji while fostering community engagement through sports events.
