Stade Francais star Peniasi Dakuwaqa is one of five debutants in the Flying Fijians squad set to face Georgia at the Adjarabet Arena on Saturday. Nicknamed “the Flash” for his exceptional speed, Dakuwaqa has scored six tries in the French Top 14 competition this season. He will be joined on the wings by Toulon’s speedster Jiuta Wainiqolo.
The other four debutants include Fijian Drua’s industrious Kitione Salawa and Inia Tabuavou (Racing 92) at the inside center position. Fijian Drua players Elia Canakaivata and Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula are expected to make their impact off the bench.
The 23-man squad is heavily influenced by Fijian Drua players, with 12 included. Waisea Nayacalevu retains his role as captain, while Vilimoni Botitu will take on the playmaker duties.
Head coach Mick Bryne emphasized that their week-long training was sufficient to prepare for the match against Georgia. “The arrival of the Europe-based players gave us a full week of preparation, which allowed us to accomplish a lot and clarify our gameplay,” said Bryne.
On Thursday, the Fijian players participated in a junior rugby festival in Batumi, interacting with aspiring local players. The Flying Fijians last faced Georgia in the Rugby World Cup last year in State de Bordeaux, where Fiji emerged victorious with a 17-12 win.
Historically, the two teams have met six times, with Fiji winning four, Georgia winning once, and one match ending in a draw. Saturday’s match will kick off at 4am (Fiji time) and will be broadcast live on Sky Pacific.
