Defending champions St John’s College, Cawaci boys’ under-19 team, are determined to uphold their title at this year’s Fiji Secondary Schools Hockey competition.
The team began their campaign with a victory against Tilak High School and followed it up with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against St Thomas High School in their second pool match yesterday.
Head coach Metuisela Masi expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance against St Thomas, noting it was a challenging match. “The match was great; St Thomas gave us a good run, but we are happy with the result,” Masi remarked.
He pointed out the differences between training on grass and turf, acknowledging that adjusting to the turf has been part of their preparation. “Preparations coming into the competition were okay, but training on grass and on hockey turf is two different things, so we are getting used to the turf and enjoying it.”
Masi underscored the importance of learning from mistakes and improving in advance of their next matches. “We will be working on our mistakes and improving in our next matches. Other than that, the boys are doing great.”
Despite many players being new to the sport, Masi remains hopeful about their chances in the tournament. With only four teams in the U19 category, St John’s College is optimistic about their quest to retain the title.
He also expressed gratitude to the parents, supporters, and teachers at the college in Suva for their steadfast support.
The tournament is set to continue until tomorrow at the National Hockey Centre in Suva.
