St John’s College Aims for U19 Hockey Glory Again!

Defending champion St John’s College is determined to maintain its title in this year’s Fiji Secondary School’s Hockey competition. The under-19 boys’ team kicked off their campaign with a strong victory against Tilak High School and followed it up with a tough 1-1 draw against St Thomas High School.

Head coach Metuisela Masi expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance against St Thomas, recognizing the challenge posed by their opponents. “The match was great; St Thomas gave us a good run, but we are happy with the result,” he said.

Masi pointed out the contrasts between training on grass and playing on turf. He noted that while the team’s preparations were solid, adapting to the turf conditions was a learning experience. “We are getting used to the turf and enjoying it,” he added.

The coach emphasized the team’s commitment to addressing mistakes and improving in upcoming matches. “We will be working on our mistakes and strive to improve for our next games. Other than that, the boys are doing great.”

Despite some challenges, including a roster with many players new to the sport, Masi remains optimistic about their chances. With only four teams in the U19 category, St John’s College is hopeful about retaining their title.

Masi expressed gratitude towards the parents, supporters, and teachers of the college in Suva for their constant encouragement. The tournament is set to conclude tomorrow at the National Hockey Centre in Suva.
