St. John Primary School Revives 14-Year-Old Athletic Tradition

St. John Primary School in Wailoku has successfully revived its inter-house athletics event for the first time in 14 years, generating excitement among students, parents, and staff. Nearly 300 students from primary and kindergarten levels participated enthusiastically in this long-awaited event.

Joseva Vere, the head of the school, discussed the importance of reinstating the inter-house competition, which had been absent for over a decade. “The inter-house competition for this school was lapsing for about 14 years. It just came last year when we talked over with the staff and thought of starting again to bring the students back because this is something they were missing,” he said, noting many students were experiencing this type of competition for the first time.

Vere emphasized the school’s commitment to uncovering and nurturing the athletic talents of students, many of whom may not have had the opportunity to showcase their potential due to the lack of this event in recent years. “Who knows, we might have some children who are very good at athletics, but we are not exposing them. That is why we are here today,” he remarked.

This year, the school’s focus remains on its internal activities, and they have opted not to participate in zonal competitions. However, Vere hinted that the possibility of joining zonal events in the future remains open.
