The situation at St Giles Hospital is becoming increasingly dire as more patients seek help for complex mental health issues, coupled with heavy substance abuse and severe related illnesses. Acting Medical Superintendent Dr. Sheetal Singh highlights a significant rise in individuals presenting with these challenges, driven by two main factors: increased community awareness about treatment options and a genuine surge in drug-related cases.

Dr. Singh reports alarming trends among young patients, some as young as 19, arriving with severe conditions such as schizophrenia alongside the use of dangerous substances, including methamphetamine. “Cannabis, marijuana, ketamine, glue, kerosene, benzene, alcohol, heroin, cocaine, and many other drugs are being used, which leads us to deal with complex cases,” she explains.

The difficulty of treating these patients is compounded when drug abuse intersects with infectious diseases. Dr. Singh points out that individuals struggling with their mental health may struggle to comprehend critical health information, such as the importance of adhering to HIV treatments or replenishing tuberculosis medications.

Assistant Minister for Health Penioni Ravunawa acknowledges the growing pressure on St Giles Hospital and indicates that plans to expand services are in motion. He states, “In the long term, it’s crucial for the government to engage in serious discussions to enhance the facility and improve human resources, along with the supply of medications for patients here at St Giles.”

Ravunawa warns that without a unified national response to address the rising drug crisis and deteriorating mental health conditions, families, communities, and the country’s healthcare system will continue to be overwhelmed. There is a pressing need for collaborative efforts to tackle these issues, fostering hope for better outcomes for those affected.
