The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has undertaken an evaluation of soil erosion and the emergence of pests and diseases following recent floods that affected numerous sugar cane farms due to heavy rainfall.

In response to these challenges, Dr. Vinesh Kumar, CEO of SRIF, emphasized the organization’s commitment to assisting farmers manage the immediate impacts of the flooding and developing strategies to mitigate future risks. SRIF teams stationed in the West and North have been collecting data on crop losses, assessing soil conditions, and identifying urgent measures to prevent further damage.

Furthermore, the teams have gathered soil and plant samples to track possible pest and disease outbreaks, which are common in the aftermath of floods. Dr. Vinesh reiterated that SRIF is dedicated to offering essential support and guidance to farmers during this difficult time.

In addition to flood assessment activities, SRIF is also validating applications for the Ratoon Management Grant, ensuring that assistance is directed efficiently to those most affected by the floods.

This proactive approach reflects the resilience and determination of both the SRIF and the farming community in Fiji to recover from these adverse conditions. By focusing on immediate needs and long-term solutions, there is hope for a revitalized agricultural sector that can withstand future environmental challenges.

In summary, SRIF is actively working to support farmers impacted by flooding through assessments, provision of guidance, and management grants, fostering a collaborative effort towards recovery and future resilience.
