The South Pacific Stock Exchange (SPX) recently made its inaugural appearance at the 63rd General Assembly and Annual Meeting of the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE) held from November 19-21 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. According to SPX Chief Executive Officer Sheraj Obeyesekere, this gathering provided a significant opportunity for Fiji’s share market to engage with global industry leaders and chart a path toward future growth.

The forum facilitated high-level discussions about the capital markets’ future and was deemed a pivotal moment for SPX. Obeyesekere expressed pride in being part of a global assembly that emphasized the importance of stock exchanges as key players in capital formation and financial inclusion.

Key topics of discussion included modern market infrastructure, the evolving role of stock exchanges, the future of initial public offerings (IPOs), and the transition to T+1 settlement, all aimed at enhancing the international capital markets’ dynamics. Obeyesekere emphasized that strengthening international ties is a strategic priority for SPX, seeing this as an essential step toward building relationships with both the WFE and other exchanges worldwide.

He also indicated that various formal collaborations with member exchanges of the WFE will be announced in the near future as a result of their participation in this significant event. SPX joined over 300 industry leaders, regulatory authorities, and representatives from more than 50 organizations at the forum, reinforcing the importance of this international engagement.

The WFE serves as the global industry group for exchanges, further highlighting the significance of SPX’s involvement in such a critical platform.

This participation signifies a hopeful step forward for Fiji’s stock market, promising to align it more closely with international best practices and enhance its operational standards. By fostering collaborations and learning from global peers, SPX is paving the way for a more dynamic and inclusive financial landscape in the South Pacific region.

In summary, the SPX’s participation at the WFE Annual Meeting not only reflects its commitment to growth and modernization but also positions Fiji as an emerging player in the global capital markets arena.
