Siya Kolisi and Malcolm Marx scored tries as South Africa achieved their first four consecutive victories over New Zealand in 75 years, winning 18-12 in the Rugby Championship held in Cape Town.
The Springboks reclaimed the Freedom Cup, a trophy contested between South Africa and New Zealand, for the first time since 2009.
Although New Zealand showed dominance at the breakdown, earning several penalties, they struggled to keep pace with the home team in the final 20 minutes as South Africa took control of possession and territory.
New Zealand was ahead 9-3 at half-time after both teams delivered a strong defensive performance, which included a yellow card for Springbok No 8 Jasper Wiese and All Blacks wing Sevu Reece.
In the second half, South Africa gained momentum from their substitutes and took the lead for the first time in the game at the 49-minute mark when Kolisi scored from close range after a sustained attack in the New Zealand 22.
The two teams exchanged penalties before South Africa faced a setback when full-back Willie le Roux received a yellow card for knocking the ball on while trying to intercept.
New Zealand’s McKenzie had a chance to put his team ahead with eight minutes remaining but missed a straightforward penalty. The visitors were also reduced to 14 players for a second time when Tyrel Lomax obstructed Cheslin Kolbe.
Following a lineout from that play, Marx scored South Africa’s second try, breaking free from a maul to dive into the corner.
