Scrumhalf Morne van den Berg will step in for the injured Grant Williams in South Africa’s squad for their crucial Rugby Championship Test against Argentina on September 21, officials announced on Thursday.
World Cup champion Williams, who was part of the starting lineup during the 18-12 victory over New Zealand in Cape Town, has been sidelined due to an arm injury.
Van den Berg made his international debut during the 64-21 win over Portugal in July and played a key role in the 30-12 Rugby Championship victory over Australia last month. The Springboks’ squad includes two other scrumhalves, Jaden Hendrikse and Cobus Reinach.
With several regular players rested for the upcoming match, South Africa currently leads the Rugby Championship standings with 18 points from four matches, well ahead of second-place Argentina, who have 10 points. A victory in Argentina would secure the championship trophy for South Africa for the fifth time in its history.
