Christmas arrived early for 600 children associated with the Collection Pillars of Recycling (CPR) across Fiji, as they received festive gifts through the Annual Christmas Gift and Stationery Drive organized by the PRF. The joyous occasion took place last week in locations including Sigatoka, Lautoka, Ba, Rakiraki, and Labasa.
The event was filled with laughter and bright smiles from the children, embodying the true spirit of the holiday season. PRF founder Amitesh Deo expressed that the drive serves as a valuable reminder to adults of the simplicity and joy of childhood—highlighting the importance of finding happiness in small things, particularly in challenging times.
Deo emphasized that the initiative aims to spread joy and happiness, particularly as global circumstances remain difficult. He articulated satisfaction with the excitement displayed by the children, stating that the twinkle in their eyes reflects the initiative’s purpose: to make Christmas magical for every child.
Initiated in 2022, the Christmas Gift and Stationery Drive is designed to offer more than just presents; it seeks to bring hope, dignity, and a sense of belonging to children and families usually overlooked. CPR plays a vital role in Fiji’s recycling landscape, collecting recyclables from dumpsites and public areas, all while facing tough circumstances. Many families involved live in poverty-stricken communities, where basic necessities such as food and shelter often overshadow the need for school supplies or toys.
Often, the children of CPR find joy during Christmas through discarded items collected from dumpsites. This initiative alleviates some of that burden, reaffirming the belief that every child, regardless of their background, deserves to receive gifts during this season.
This year’s goal is to ensure that the children not only receive toys but also essential school stationery to prepare for the approaching school year. The initiative aims to restore dignity to these families and to ensure their children feel valued.
Deo concluded by urging society to recognize and support the crucial role these families play in recycling efforts, inviting everyone to extend not just gifts but also hope and respect this holiday season.
By acknowledging the contributions of these families and ensuring that children feel cherished, the program fosters a sense of community and goodwill that can indeed uplift these young lives, not just during Christmas but every day of the year.
