Sacred Heart College is emphasizing the importance of student experiences over competition, as it hosted its inter-house athletic events at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. Principal Praveena Chand highlighted that while winning is significant, the focus remains on creating memorable experiences for all students. With many students unlikely to qualify for highly competitive meets, the inter-house event provides them with a valuable opportunity to engage in athletic activities and prepare for the upcoming Suva Zone One meet.
Chand stated, “Because the majority of the students may not participate in the zones, we are giving them time today to just feel, and get into the spirit of the Fiji Finals.” This approach not only fosters enjoyment but also creates a sense of community among students before they attend future competitions as spectators.
The preparations for the Suva Zone One meet, scheduled for July 27, are in full swing, and athletes will be selected based on their performances during the inter-house competitions. The Fiji Finals are set to occur from August 24 to 26, also at the HFC Bank Stadium, where athletes will showcase their skills on a larger stage.
Currently, similar inter-house events have been taking place across schools in the region, such as at Marist Brothers Primary School, which also held its inter-house event at HFC Bank Stadium, aiming to prepare students for the upcoming Suva Zone and Chow Games. The trend of these collaborative sporting events is becoming more common, as schools strive to prepare their students for future athletic challenges while building a strong sporting community.
This focus on experience and participation underscores the spirit of sportsmanship in educational sports and reflects a growing culture of inclusivity and engagement within Fiji’s athletic landscape. As young athletes prepare for these competitions, they not only develop their physical capabilities but also learn vital life skills such as teamwork and perseverance, ensuring a positive future both in sports and in their personal growth.
