Sports: The Unifying Force Transforming Fiji

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka highlighted the crucial role of sports in fostering unity and pushing athletes to achieve their maximum potential. During a celebration of the accomplishments of athletes, coaches, and administrators in 2023, he referenced the well-known quote from the late Nelson Mandela, which underscores the transformative power of sports in building a nation.

Rabuka quoted Mandela, saying, “Sport has the power to change the world,” affirming that this sentiment resonates in Fiji. He emphasized that sports unify and inspire people while challenging them to surpass their limits.

The Prime Minister noted that 2023 was a particularly active year for sports, with athletes participating in significant events such as the Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands, the Rugby World Cup in France, and the Netball World Cup in South Africa.

“Our athletes are more than just competitors; they represent our nation, carrying the hopes and aspirations of all Fijians. Each time you wear the national uniform or jersey, you proudly raise our flag on the international stage,” he stated.

At the recent awards ceremony, Fiji Swimming received two accolades, with Anahira McCutcheon earning the Unit Trust of Fiji Young Female Athlete of the Year award and Trisa Cheer being named Sports World Technical Official of the Year. Fiji Rugby also claimed two awards, with Simon Raiwalui recognized as the FIJI Water Coach of the Year and the Flying Fijians receiving the Asco Motors Team of the Year award.
