The Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) has voiced serious concerns regarding the exploitation of children in sports events, particularly highlighting instances where young participants are expected to clean up after adults at tournaments like rugby matches. As the organization marks its 31st anniversary, it is using this milestone to draw attention to this pressing issue and to advocate for meaningful change.

Amitesh Deo, the founder of PRF, emphasized that while children should be empowered to advocate for responsible behavior among adults, the current expectation for them to act as waste cleaners is a form of exploitation. He stated, “We will continue to push forward and advocate for change. The work is far from over, and we are asking people to come forward and be part of the solution in a holistic way.”

Deo acknowledged that waste management has become a significant global and national crisis. In recent times, both government and private sector entities have begun to engage in recycling initiatives, which he welcomed. However, he also urged stakeholders to recognize that clean-up campaigns should not be viewed as complete solutions. Instead, these often media-friendly initiatives can mask deeper, underlying issues that require systemic addressing.

This advocacy for children’s rights at sporting events aligns with PRF’s ongoing commitment to improving waste management practices, which is a crucial part of their agenda as they head into 2025. By raising awareness of these children’s responsibilities being misappropriated, PRF aims to foster a community mindset that values both responsible adult behavior and a sustainable environment.

The hopeful takeaway here is the potential for collective action where communities, governments, and organizations unite to rectify these issues, fostering a culture of responsibility in both environmental stewardship and the treatment of young individuals in sports settings.
