Former South African rugby 7s star, Rosko Specman, is looking forward to his debut in the 2025 Coral Coast 7s tournament in Fiji, which officially begins tomorrow at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka. In a recent interview, Specman expressed his excitement about visiting Fiji for the first time and competing in one of the premier rugby 7s events globally.

“I’m looking forward to the Coral Coast 7s tournament,” Specman noted, anticipating the challenges ahead. He is particularly aware that facing Fijian teams will be a unique test, stating, “I know it’s not going to be easy because now you must defend against a lot of Fijians. In the World Series, you only play against seven Fijians on the field, but this week, there will be many more.”

The 35-year-old, who is affectionately known as “Specmagic” due to his impressive footwork and playmaking skills, will be part of the McDonald’s Mike Friday Select 7s team. His teammates include well-known figures like Jerry Tuwai, Harry McNulty, Luke Treharne, and a strong contingent of Fijian players including Viliame Naikausa, Rubeni Kabu, and Suliano Volivoli. Specman recognizes the formidable challenge presented by the hosting nation: “I know there will be many little Jerry Tuwai’s and Semi Kunatani’s out there. You need to be on your game, especially when the guys pull out their ‘dance plays.’”

Despite his veteran status, Specman regards the opportunity to play in Fiji as a privilege: “It’s a nice opportunity for me, but I think it would have been better if I had come here when I was younger. Still, I’ll give them a run for their money.”

The Coral Coast 7s tournament has a history of exposing emerging rugby stars, and with Specman’s participation alongside a star-studded lineup, spectators can expect thrilling matches and unforgettable moments. The tournament kicks off tomorrow, featuring some of the best local and international talent.

This year’s event is remarkable not only for the caliber of players involved but also for its role in fostering community spirit around rugby in Fiji. The tournament will host 44 teams, combining established talents with rising stars, showcasing the country’s rich rugby culture. With free admission, it’s poised to be a celebration that encourages local participation and strengthens the bond between the sport and its community.

In summary, the Coral Coast 7s is more than just a thrilling rugby competition; it serves as an inspiring platform for the next generation of players and reinforces Fiji’s position as a cornerstone of the rugby world. The tournament will undoubtedly nurture the passionate rugby culture in Fiji, leaving hopeful aspirations for the future of the sport.
