Sowakula Returns as Flying Fijians Prepare for England, France Tests

The Fiji Water Flying Fijians are gearing up for a promising November tour in Europe, highlighted by the inclusion of former All Black Pita Gus Sowakula in their squad. This announcement, made by team manager Josaia Tuinamata at Rugby House, comes as part of the team’s effort to enhance their competitive edge ahead of a series of critical matches against England and France.

Sowakula’s selection marks a significant moment as he comes off a three-year stand-down period following his last appearance with the All Blacks in July 2022. His addition to the 32-member squad is expected to bolster the team’s forward pack, particularly at the number eight position. Head coach Mick Byrne expressed his confidence in Sowakula’s abilities and highlighted the importance of integrating new talent, stating that players like Sowakula bring not only experience but also fresh perspectives to the team.

This tour will also see the debut of newcomers Tim Hoyt and Atunaisa Sokobale, who play in England and France, respectively. Their selection is part of Byrne’s strategy to provide opportunities for emerging players, ensuring a blend of seasoned professionals and fresh faces. Hoyt represents the Worcester Warriors in the RFU Championship, while Sokobale comes from the French Top 14 club Castres Olympique.

Byrne is keen to assess the performance of both established players and newcomers in training ahead of the matches, emphasizing that current form is paramount in the selection process. The Flying Fijians are set to face England on November 9 at Twickenham and then France in Bordeaux shortly after.

This approach of leveraging both international experience and local talent is reflective of a broader trend in rugby, where players are increasingly seeking to represent their heritage as eligibility rules evolve. Such inclusivity not only enhances team competitiveness but cultivates a positive outlook for Fijian rugby, inspiring hope among fans and supporters as they aim for success on the international stage.
