South Asian Stars Break Global Barriers: Grammys, Coachella and a New Era

Arooj Aftab made history in 2022 as the first Pakistani artist to win a Grammy Award, taking home the global music performance honor for her song “Mohabbat.” This achievement opened doors for South Asian artists in the global music scene, showcasing their unique talents and cultural influences.

In a significant development a year later, actor and singer Diljit Dosanjh made his mark at the esteemed Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, stepping onto the stage as the first artist from Punjab, India, a region rich in musical heritage. This recognition began to highlight the local and traditional music styles that have been gaining momentum on international platforms.

Moreover, the rise of first-generation Indian American artist Avara has been noteworthy. Recently, she held a concert in Brooklyn, where she captivated audiences by performing amid a bed of rose petals. Since November 2024, Avara has seen a remarkable growth in her Spotify listeners, skyrocketing by more than 250% to over 250,000 monthly listeners.

Audience member Alex Kim, who was drawn in by Avara’s TikToks, noted the changing dynamics of music consumption, saying people’s short attention spans are being challenged as they discover and connect with authentic musical expressions. This reflects the broader trend of South Asian influences making waves globally, following genres like Afrobeat, K-pop, and Latin music.

To capitalize on this emerging trend, Warner Music Group recently launched 5 Junction Records, specifically aimed at promoting South Asian artists to North American listeners. Billboard CEO Mike Van stated that the increase in international appeal of South Asian music is a gradual development shaped by evolving tastes and the activation of diaspora audiences.

As artists from South Asia gain recognition and contribute to the global music dialogue, this trend illuminates the potential for more diverse sounds and narratives to be celebrated on international stages. The collaboration between innovative artists and forward-thinking music labels may indicate a bright future for cultural connections and cross-genre experiments, encouraging a more inclusive musical landscape.
