Hoskins Sotutu, the standout loose forward for the Auckland Blues, has shared his current focus on reviving his team’s struggling season in Super Rugby Pacific after being overlooked by All Blacks coach Scott Robertson. At 26, Sotutu has not played for New Zealand since November 2022 and will soon be eligible to declare for either England or Fiji due to World Rugby’s three-year stand-down rule.

After winning the Super Rugby Player of the Year title last season, Sotutu expressed his disappointment at missing out on selection for the All Blacks squads. Reports suggested he was exploring international options, including possible discussions with England coach Steve Borthwick regarding an allegiance switch, but he clarified that he hasn’t directly communicated with Borthwick, relying instead on his agent to navigate these possibilities.

Sotutu’s eligibility to play for England stems from his English mother, while his father, Waisake, hails from Fiji and has a rich rugby history, having represented Fiji in the 1999 Rugby World Cup. With a potential move to England on the horizon, it’s worth noting that clubs like Saracens and Leicester Tigers have shown interest. However, he remains under contract with New Zealand Rugby until the end of 2024 and can only make a move after fulfilling relevant eligibility requirements.

Despite the ups and downs regarding his international career, Sotutu’s dedication to the Blues can be seen as a testament to his commitment to his roots. His involvement in helping the Blues secure a championship last season showcases his talent and determination. As he continues to play, fans and rugby enthusiasts remain hopeful for successful outcomes from his endeavors, both within the Super Rugby league and potentially on the international stage in the future.
