Solomon Islands Women Shine with Opening Victory in OFC Championship

The Solomon Islands began their OFC U-16 Women’s Championship journey with a convincing 2-0 win over Tahiti in Suva.

In the opening minutes of the match, the Solomon Islands took charge, with Gracester Kini finding the back of the net just three minutes in. This early goal set a vigorous rhythm for the team. Throughout the first half, Tahiti struggled under pressure and faced numerous defensive challenges.

Solomon Islands forward Joy Toby nearly extended the lead in the 19th minute, but her shot was expertly saved by Tahitian goalkeeper Kalea Torohia. Despite several chances, including a close attempt by Kini that missed the target, the Solomon Islands had to wait until the second half to solidify their advantage.

Kini continued to pose a threat with her attempts but was unable to convert. As the second half unfolded, Tahiti made a push, with captain Maerehia Dehors firing a powerful shot that was saved by Solomon Islands goalkeeper Fiona Goroani.

Despite Tahiti’s efforts to retaliate, it was the Solomon Islands that capitalized on a late free kick. Anna Ellen executed a well-placed cross into the box, which was met by Brenda Areni, who netted the second goal to secure the victory.

The match concluded with the Solomon Islands displaying a strong and united performance, while Tahiti will need to regroup before facing New Zealand in their upcoming match. Meanwhile, the Solomon Islands will look to keep their winning momentum alive against New Caledonia.
