Solomon Islands Triumph: U-16 Women’s Team Shines in Championship Opener

The Solomon Islands launched their OFC U-16 Women’s Championship with an impressive 2-0 win over Tahiti in Suva.

From the outset, Solomon Islands took charge, with Gracester Kini netting a goal only three minutes into the match, establishing an energetic tone for her team.

Tahiti struggled defensively throughout the first half, enduring significant pressure. Solomon Islands’ Joy Toby came close to increasing their lead with a shot in the 19th minute, which was skillfully stopped by Tahitian goalkeeper Kalea Torohia.

Despite several near misses, including a close attempt from Kini that barely went off target, Solomon Islands held off until the second half to demonstrate their dominance more clearly.

As the match progressed, although Kini kept up the offensive pressure with several bold attempts, she couldn’t manage to score.

Tahiti attempted to fight back, as their captain Maerehia Dehors unleashed a powerful strike that was effectively saved by Solomon Islands goalkeeper Fiona Goroani.

The decisive moment came late in the game when Solomon Islands earned a free kick. Anna Ellen executed a precise cross that connected with Brenda Areni, who secured the second goal and solidified the team’s victory.

The match concluded with Solomon Islands showcasing a strong, united performance, while Tahiti will need to regroup for their upcoming encounter against New Zealand. Meanwhile, the Solomon Islands will prepare to meet New Caledonia, aiming to continue their winning momentum.
