The Solomon Islands began their OFC U-16 Women’s Championship journey with a convincing 2-0 win over Tahiti in Suva.
From the outset, the Solomon Islands took command, with Gracester Kini finding the net in the third minute, establishing a strong early lead. The first half saw Tahiti under pressure and struggling defensively.
Joy Toby, a forward for the Solomon Islands, nearly increased the lead in the 19th minute, but her shot was skillfully saved by Tahiti’s goalkeeper Kalea Torohia.
Despite numerous chances, including a close half volley from Kini that just missed the target, the Solomon Islands were unable to extend their lead until the second half.
Kini continued to make offensive attempts but was ultimately unsuccessful in scoring again. As the match progressed into the second half, Tahiti made an effort to rally, with captain Maerehia Dehors unleashing a powerful shot that Solomon Islands’ goalkeeper Fiona Goroani managed to save.
The Solomon Islands took advantage of a late free kick, with Anna Ellen delivering an excellent cross into the box. Brenda Areni was on the receiving end and netted the second goal, sealing the win for her team.
The match concluded with the Solomon Islands showing strength and teamwork, while Tahiti will need to regroup as they prepare for their upcoming match against New Zealand. Meanwhile, the Solomon Islands are set to face New Caledonia, aiming to continue their successful start.
