Solomon Islands Shine in U-16 Women’s Championship Opener!

The Solomon Islands began their OFC U-16 Women’s Championship journey with a convincing 2-0 win over Tahiti in Suva.

The match saw the Solomon Islands asserting themselves early, with Gracester Kini netting a goal just three minutes in, establishing a dominant momentum for her team. Throughout the first half, Tahiti struggled under pressure and encountered numerous defensive challenges.

Solomon Islands forward Joy Toby came close to adding another goal in the 19th minute, but her shot was expertly saved by Tahiti’s goalkeeper Kalea Torohia. Despite several opportunities, including a near miss from Kini with a half-volley, the Solomon Islands could not extend their lead until the second half.

Kini remained a persistent threat, taking ambitious shots that, unfortunately, did not convert into goals. As the game progressed into the second half, Tahiti’s captain Maerehia Dehors attempted to rally her team with a powerful shot, which was expertly saved by Solomon Islands’ goalkeeper Fiona Goroani.

In the closing stages of the match, the Solomon Islands capitalized on an opportunity from a free kick. Anna Ellen executed a precise cross into the box, finding Brenda Areni, who scored the second goal, effectively sealing the win for her team.

The match concluded with Solomon Islands showcasing their strength and teamwork, while Tahiti will need to regroup ahead of their upcoming match against New Zealand. Meanwhile, the Solomon Islands will face New Caledonia, aiming to continue their successful start to the tournament.
